Rhythm & Romance with “Chico & Rita”

There’s love, there’s music, there’s heartache, there’s truth…“Chico & Rita” is an adult, Spanish animated film that tells the story of a piano player and a singer who embark on a long journey on their rise to fame.

The time frame is in the late 1940s and early 1950s and takes place in the cities of Havana, New York City, Paris and Las Vegas. Both Chico and Rita are gifted with their talent and that is where their romance has united them, however, there is something that always intervenes and keeps them apart.

It’s a love story that will bring you romance, good music, and well-played characters. You will feel as if you are really in pre-Castro Cuba time!

Both Chico and Rita are an irresistible pair and the love they have for each other and their music, will make you fall in love with the movie.

    Love, love, love with #TheLuckyOne

I went and saw The Lucky One yesterday and I thought it was really good. A lot of clichés but I don’t think that’s a surprise and I also don’t think that’s what makes the movie negative (I’ve been seeing a lot of negative responses toward the movie).

Maybe I’m playing favorites…I love Nicholas Sparks’ books & I’m a fan of Zac Efron 🙂 . The movie also stars Taylor Schilling and a really cute German shepherd. You can’t hate on the dog (Zeus) if you hate the movie!

    Any opinions?

    Mention #TheLuckyOne

You can also ‘Tweet’ to unlock an exclusive clip from either Zac Efron or Nicholas Sparks

    Year of 9th Wonder

In spirit of this upcoming weekend’s Pioneer DJ Stylus Awards in Toronto, I feel this video comes from a relevant home. LRG presents: 9th Wonder, “The Wonder Year” Documentary.

This piece follows one full year in the life of Grammy award winner, North Carolina native, hip hop producer, DJ, University Lecturer, and Rapper, Patrick Douthit… better known as 9th Wonder.

Beginning his career as producer for hip hop group Little Brother, and since leaving the group in 2007, 9th has also worked with Mary J Blige, Jean Grey, Weezy, Wale, Jay-Z, Drake, Erykah Badu… and the list continues. 9th’s production style has been known to sample greats like Curtis Mayfield and Al Green. Throughout the video 9th takes us through the neighborhood where he grew up, introduces us to his craft and verbalizes the mind state that creates hits and wins awards.

I’m so excited for this video to drop and while the release date is still yet to be announced, word is that one will need to vote the showing in your city. Peep the trailer below.

    Baring SKINS

I love movies… I’ll be honest, I’m not really the kind of girl who will watch a tv show (other than The Game-pre BET), for some reason theres something about a film that can solely grab and hold my attention. I go through the blockbusters, as we all do, and I LOVE to jump on English docu-type films, my favorites being Adulthood and The Firm [#shoutout to my cousin Harry who lives it day to day].

My friend Liz and I have a ritual on free mornings of waking up, baking, and catching a flick with our breakfast… and while amidst our ritual (lol) the topic of Skins came up. More specifically, Liz filled me in on the just-launched American adaptation as well as the upcoming movie rumored to launch this Summer!

Like Adulthood and its sequel Kidulthood, Skins is a British drama about the youth who grow up in some of the roughest neighborhoods in England, exploring topics such as substance abuse, death, eating disorders, sexual orientation, dysfunctional families, violence and more, the difference is that Skins is a television show. Baring in mind that the overall tolerance for subject content and nature in Europe is far more lenient than on this continent,  the North American media have been on a rant about the shows sexual content. While I admittingly haven’t had a moment to check out the show, I will say that my love for these specific types of programs has a lot to do with how deep they go into often untouched, controversial, racy subjects.

    The Parents Television Council wanted the show gone before it even aired, they’re currently requesting that MTV be investigated for laws surrounding child porn and exploitation. Several news programs are currently discussing the topics… MTV released this statement;

“We are confident that the episodes of Skins will not only comply with all applicable legal requirements, but also with our responsibilities to our viewers.”

Tell us what you think 😉

    21 – Card Counting Cuties

If you are looking for something to watch at the cinema, check out 21 – the new movie about MIT students counting cards in Vegas and making some serious coin. I got the chance to go to the advance screening last night from the good people over at Sony BMG.

Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Spacey, Aaron Yoo, Liza Lapira, Jacob Pitts.

My favourite part of the movie was the geek to chic transformation, sort of like Lainey Boggs style. It was really interesting to see the character developments but I thought the movie was too episodic and plot driven – I would have liked to see more depth in the emotional parts. Anyway! Parts of it felt long but its a good because it is actually based on a true story! It’s in theaters March 28 – bring down the house! Find the plot from www.tribute.ca

The novel Bringing Down the House and its film counterpart 21 focuses on the 1993 resurgence of the team, when Kaplan, J.P. Massar and John Chang decided to open up a new partnership named Strategic Investments. Garnishing an initial investment of over $1 million, the largest to date, they set off for Las Vegas. Although they won millions of dollars, the team eventually had to disband after being identified by the casinos as card counters and banned.
