    Pasadena Rosebowl

The 2nd Sunday of every month is an exciting time to be in LA!

Here is my ticket – $8

There are numerous flea markets in Los Angeles and treasure hunting is one of the best things you can do if you are an avid shopper. Sometimes the proliferation of chain stores can make you feel like its deja vu every single mall you enter. So this is absolutely refreshing and a great date venture too!

These are pitcher plants, they catch flies!

You can really test the patience of your date. I went there last week with one mission in mind. A leather duffel bag for travel.  Along the way I found a lot of interesting goods.

    accessories for days

As you know, I went to Pasadena Rosebowl with my dad when he came to visit in April… So 2nd time round, there were some repeat vendors but all in all – a great way to look into the past so we can confidently stride into the future.

I realized a few things.. that the past matters just as much as the future does and I got inspiration and ideas for my make up line. (I am working on that always!) But I walked home with what I came for. Woohoo!

    My love affair with Malls

During Thanksgiving Weekend, I drove down to Costa Mesa to the South Coast Plaza! Ooo it’s fancy!

This mall reminded me of my favorite Yorkdale Mall 🙂  SCP is suppose to be the 3rd largest mall in US, the biggest being Mall of America in Minnesota (I’ve been there too ^_^).  Earlier this year, I got to go to the biggest mall in Canada too! That would be the West Edmonton Mall of course.

Mom & I at West Edmonton Mall

I love malls, they are my second home! For those of you who don’t know, My very first job was at Fairview Mall at the the ice cream boutique Laura Secord!  This was 10 years ago… and I was only 15!  I wish I had photos. Then I went on to work retail at various clothing stores like Costa Blanca, Aritzia, Aldo, Laura Petites, Get Out Side, Pull, R2W (icon shoes) to name a few!  This probably why people always ask me for help when I am shopping; they think I work there. LOL  Well once you have worked in RETAIL you have that persona and awareness that never goes away. I love working retail! It gives you amazing experience, discounts and mall perks – I highly recommend it as a job while you are in school!

    Shopping in Orlando

When I walk into a mall, I just feel amazing!  This is probably why I got an A in my Consumer Behavior class at FIDM right? In California, like Florida, there are a lot of outdoor malls – I like them!  The layouts of these malls are more like stores in one centralized area.  They just built one in Toronto called Shops of Don Mills . I wonder how they will do during the snowy months…A lot of ‘firsts’ are opening there including Murale, Anthropologie. The lovely girls over at coco&lowe wrote about the Murale opening here.

Outdoor malls like Americana and the Grove are my favorite places to go in LA to get a sense of community feels. Do you like outdoor malls? I like them but they are more of a ‘market place’ to me. I grew up being used to a mall as a big building where there is a food court and movie theater attached to it. Nevertheless, if it’s a mall – I will love it, whatever the format.

Neil and I at the Grove

I love malls and they can be overwhelming during the holidays so make sure you go during the week, avoid weekend, drink plenty of water, leave your coat in the car and go with your besties!  Where is your favorite time to shop? Recession or no recession, they are not selling things – they are selling optimism and I’ll take 2. Thank you!

    Happy Shopping!

    Fred Segal – Studio Beautymix

The beauty section of Fred Segal has an impressive range of products, special selection of exclusive brands and an inviting atmosphere. When you enter to beauty section, there is a extensive fragrance collection and numerous extravagantly wrapped soaps, lotions and all things wonderful.

I have not heard of most of these brands; they are very boudoir and mostly organic. One of the brands that stuck out to me was the Crazy Sticks. They are solid perfume in a stick and their collection is extensive. With scent stories like Russian leather, vanilla, elemi crystals, ozonic flower and cedar – these ‘caress-like perfumes’ are free of paraben, alcohol and coloring agents. The rich marketing stories that come along with each sent is as rich and multi layered as the fragrance itself. There was marketing material provided in mini booklets under the product which was very helpful. One of the items included in the promotional material included a free gift, a Crazy Stick holder. So yummy, and so cute!

Towards the back of the store, color cosmetic brands like Stila, Smashbox took stage left. The center display was of Orlane and La Mer. Towards the right of the store it featured a beautiful rainbow display of custom skin care line that are packaged syringes.  There was also a section for Dianne Brill, a vintage style color cosmetic brand with catchy names and beautiful products. Miniature lipgloss in a truffle box, and cute names like ‘panties in a bunch’ and ‘fresh water pearl foundation’ make this line memorable, fun and reminiscent of old Hollywood glam.

The other brand that stood out to me was mojo cosmetics. The packaging is very industrial, silver and shiny in bullets.  It has an old school war-time feel with ‘propaganda style’ advertising. These brands are off the chain and very niche.. Not your everyday Sephora brand, ya dig? 🙂

Fred Segal has a beauty niche filled with little-known brands and invites shoppers on a journey to discover their new must-have products.  Check it out here.

    Fifi Lapin

The sun never stops shining in LA. I might have to grab this for what they call ‘Fall’ here. HA HA HA. It was 22 degrees this morning and I saw people wearing wool scarves, Northface jackets and sweaters and toques. No joke. I got my eye on this little number.
