@JCPenney’s New Year, New You with DWTS’s @Karina_Smirnoff

About a week ago, I told a friend that I was going to jot down a New Year’s plan (I say “plan” because I’m not really into the whole “resolutions” thing). And she asked in surprise, “Isn’t it a little late to be making New Year’s resolutions?”

    The answer is NO.

First of all, I still get to call my plan a New Year’s plan because it’s only January. I mean, give me a break! But even if I wanted to write such a plan in, say, March that would be perfectly fine, too. Fact is, every day you wake up is a new opportunity to be a “new you” or to aspire to a new goal. Heck, you can make a fresh start right in the middle of the day if you want.

It’s all about setting a goal, making steps to execute it and sticking to it (and not beating yourself up if you happen to fall off track).

Last week, I attended JCPenney’s New Year, New You Fitness Event at their showroom in SoHo. The event showcased products and apparel from JCPenney, along with ideas to help you make a fresh start for 2014. Just my luck, this fit in perfectly with my New Year’s plan.

Goal #1 in my New Year’s plan: Get to the gym more consistently
I’m a (semi) regular at the gym and I want to become more consistent about not breaking gym days.

We got to pick a workout outfit from JCPenney’s Xersion and CityStreets Activewear lines. My current workout wardrobe consists of random leggings and tank tops, so just putting this on got me pumped. It’s not just that it looks great; it’s also specially designed for sweating and moving your body. Can’t say the same for my all-purpose leggings.

We put our workout gear to the test during a dance class led by the event host, Dancing with the Star’s Karina Smirnoff. Fortunately, she kept the moves easy-to-follow for us. It was a blast and Karina looked fab in JCPenney’s Xersion and CityStreets Activewear lines.

Goal #2 in my New Year’s plan: Eat healthy
I like to eat healthy, wholesome foods, lots of fruits, veggies, fiber and protein. I love making smoothies, which makes it easy for me to down all the good stuff in one cup. For the New Year, I want to do more of this and less of falling into a takeout rut.

After the class, Karina juiced healthy treats with JCPenney’s Bella High Power Juice Extractor and Magic Bullet Blender. Celebrity nutritionist and chef Melissa Petitto was also onsite creating delicious and healthy juices and smoothies with JCPenney’s national brand juicers to quick our thirst.

We took home the Bella Rocket Blender for ourselves. I already used it and I’m hooked. It’s so much easier and convenient that the standard blender I’d been using.

Whatever your plans (or resolutions) are for the New Year, you can’t go wrong with staying active and eating healthy. Just try to spend a little time on your goals each day and you’ll be where you want to be in no time!

    Best Of NYC: Get Fit

In the past couple of months, I became increasingly aware of the calories I was consuming every week from all my nomming. Because I was heading for Asia, I wanted to avoid hearing that I had gained weight from errr… everyone I know, so I decided to up the workouts. My doctor also suggested exercising every day to prevent sleep deprivation and stress. She said that when the mind is racing, it is difficult to sleep. However, if you work out every day and do some yoga, then you’ll be too tired to think when it’s time to sleep. Since I starting working out two to three times a week, I’ve been sleeping better and I’ve also gotten leaner.

Circuit of Change: I am obsessed with the Zen Bootcamp class at this studio. Brian, Derek, and Olga teach an hour-long ass-kicking class that combines boxing, gymnastics, yoga, and Pilates style abdominal exercises. If the classes were cheaper, I would go five times a week but they are $27 per class or $69 for three classes.

Yoga To The People: This donation-based studio in St. Marks is perfect for those on a tight budget. Anyone can join their power yoga class, but I would let the instructor know if it’s your first time practicing. The teachers encourage students to make noises and hum- I personally find this to be over the top and unnecessary-but hey, who can complain about a free class that will make you sweat. You can also borrow a mat for $2 and buy water for $1 if necessary.

Exhale Bootcamp Core Class: I tried this class out because I had a three-for-one coupon for their SoHo studio. The barre class was not at all my cup of tea, but I decided to sign up for their core bootcamp class. I was delightfully surprised to find that the class was fantastic. Of course, each class can vary because of the teacher, but I loved the use of the medicine ball and weights combined with cardio and core-building exercises. For some reason, my arms and thighs were sorer than my abs the next day but I highly recommend this class if you are not on a budget!

Now that I’m in China and far away from these beloved classes, I found a great alternative while traveling, especially if there isn’t a gym around. I’ve been using the Nike Training App for months and I love it. Two of my friends and I even have a little Nike Training group going on at school every other day. The App contains tons of options at the beginner, intermediate, advanced levels and you can do 15 minute, 30 minute, or 45 minute workouts. I usually do the 30 minute workouts that consist of a different circuit (weights, medicine ball, abs, cardio) every minute. You can play videos to see how each circuit is done and a Siri-type voice advises you on how to do the circuits throughout the workout. Every time you finish a workout, it shows you (see picture below) the approximate amount of factories burned, your total amount of training time, and the amount of workout time you have to complete before you unlock your next “reward”.

    Exercise tips from @NadeenBoman

Yes I took a few sips before taking the picture…

A lot of us get lazy and find it hard to stay fit and healthy during the winter months; so Nadeen Boman (spokesperson of Powerade Zero ION4) shared some of her go-to exercises to help us stay nice and tight during the cold season.

    Legs

Squat and Leg Lift– Start in squat position with feet about hip width apart and chest lifted. Knees should be over your heels so that you can see your toes. Stand and extend right leg back at a 45 degree angle, leading with your heel. Repeat squat, stand and leg lift on right leg for 15 reps before switching to the the left leg. (This exercise is good for a firm butt)

    Arms

Plank Ups and Downs- Start in plank position with your body in a straight line, toes and forearms on the ground. Keep your butt down to engage your abdominals or if this is too difficult then go on your knees pulling your heels to your glutes. Push yourself up onto one hand then the other before going back down into the start position. Complete 5 up and downs then repeat with the other arm leading. Do 2-3 sets. (Good for shoulders and core)

Abs Do all 3 ab exercises back to back and repeat for a total of 2-3 sets.

Knee Touch Crunches- Lie on back with feet flat on the floor, knees about fist width apart. Reach for your knees by tucking your chin and brining your shoulder blades off the ground. Do 10-15 reps.

Heel Touches- Start off in same position as above. With your hands about 2 inches from the ground, reach your right hand toward your right heel then reach with your left hand toward your left heel. Touch heel 10-15 times.

Knees to Shoulders- Start in same position as previous abdominal exercises. Beginners have hands pressing into ground beside butt or increase difficulty and keep by your ears. Roll your bum off the ground by brining your knees towards your chest. Do 10-15 reps.

    peace and love

Can You Handle The tRuth? – Ruth Tuffet

Hi HeyDoYou family! Thanks for welcoming me with open arms 🙂 I’m excited about being your new blog connection to all that is cool in Miami and around town. Partnering with Yvonne and heydoyou.com has been an awesome task!

As you might’ve guessed my name is Ruth 🙂 last name Tuffet, so yes, I’ve heard it all from Babe Ruth to Little Miss Muffet, I am somewhat of a commodity. I’m an island girl, Haitian by blood, American by location, Traveler at heart.

I am a lover of all things that smell good, fashion, and fun. I am a jack of all trades, so I know a little about a lot, and a lot about a little, but I am indeed a master of my life. I model, motivate, mentor, perform spoken word, and train women on the art of loving themselves and fitness. I enjoy fashion shows, basketball games, plays, ballets, museums, jazz, neo-soul, old school hip-hop/r-n-b, alternative rock, concerts, the gym, eating, high fashion, black dresses, getting glamorous, high heels, candy, shades, accessories, reading books (especially my bible), writing, mani-pedis, natural hairs, wigs, beach days, sleeping in, singing off key, suspenders, braces, hot nerds, Thai food, me-time, quality-time and movies. I graduated from Florida International University with my BS in Business and I love marketing, it gives me a chance to learn more about people and what peaks their interests. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE my family, as dysfunctional as we are, that’s what makes us so great and my friends are just as much my family as my brother and sisters are. So that’s just a glimpse into the mass of conflicting emotions that makes me so wonderful.
