Womens History Month : Zelda Fichandler : Pioneer of Theater

Zelda Fichandler was a pillar in the regional theater movement, leading Washington’s Arena Stage for 41 years. She produced 400 shows and directed more than 50 for a company that helped spur the growth of professional theater away from Broadway and inspired the creation of non-profit theaters around the country.

In 1950, Zelda’s ArenaStage was Washington D.C.’s first fully integrated theater, at a time when city parks and recreational facilities were not yet integrated.

Later, as Head of NYU’s Graduate Acting Program for 25 years, Zelda trained Marcia Gay Harden, Rainn Wilson, Mahershala Ali, Dianne Wiest, James Earl Jones, Stacy Keach, and Jane Alexander.

    This September marks what would have been Zelda’s 100th birthday. To honor her legacy will be two new books;
    –  An oral history from Routledge, To Repair the World: Zelda Fichandler and the Transformation of American Theater
    – A collection of Zelda’s essays, speeches, and manifestos put together by Theatre Communications Group, The Long Revolution: Sixty Years on the Frontlines of the American Theater

Zakat Foundation of America Prepares for Ramadan

Considered the most blessed month weaving together all the 5 sacred pillars of Islam, Ramadan is rapidly approaching for millions of followers of Islam. In this period, the blessings of giving are magnified while fasting allows a worshipper to focus on their devotion to Allah. Since late 2023, the staff and volunteer teams at Zakat Foundation of America have been preparing to deliver charity in over 40 countries in addition to many local United States offices. Muslims are required to pay a portion of their wealth, called zakat to the poor and needy, and ZFA will help distribute that charity to those most in need across the globe.

This year, Zakat Foundation of America is focusing their efforts on four main projects: food packages, orphan care, clean water and 1 Million Meals for Gaza.

    • Food Packages: Food packages are distributed to those in need across the globe through ZFA’s Food Security program. The organization works with local partners on the ground to identify the most vulnerable. The packages are filled with items like rice, oil, sugar, flour and beans designed to sustain a family for several weeks. In celebration of Ramadan, local offices also host Iftar dinners, where the entire community can come together for food, connection, and fellowship.  A previous beneficiary in Gaza stated, “My kids were delighted when I opened the door with a box in my hands. When the package was opened, each one of them took out their favorite food. We live in very tough economic conditions, and this box is our gift for this month.”
    • Orphan Care: There are an estimated 153 million orphans in the world. ZFA’s Orphan Care Program supports children who have lost at least one parent, focusing on keeping them connected in their local schools, immediate family, and community. Orphan support provides school fees, food, clothing, and more. The program is designed to set up these children for long-term success. Eid gifts are also given to orphans, which, for many, may be the only gifts they can receive in a year.
    • Water: An ongoing charity is considered sadaqah jariyah, which continues to bless the recipients for many generations. Diseases from dirty water kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. To this end, Zakat Foundation strives to provide access to clean water for the world’s communities. Clean water transforms a community and positively impacts areas like agriculture, sustainability, education, and overall health and wellness. To date, ZFA has completed 4,165 water projects in 24 countries, serving almost 1.5 million people (about the population of West Virginia). Those wishing to sponsor a well can choose to have a designated plaque honoring a loved one or serving as a memorial.
    • 1 Million Meals for Gaza: While the violence in Gaza continues to be ongoing, the suffering of the area’s most innocent: women, children, elderly and families continues to increase exponentially. Continuing to be cut off from basic societal support, basic needs are being neglected for the citizens of Gaza. ZFA has been able to partner with local UN schools and work within the country to prepare and distribute hot meals, accompanied by clear drinking water, to anyone in need. The goal of the organization is to prepare 1 million meals for the people of Gaza. Zakat Foundation is committed to short-term relief and long-term rehabilitation including rebuilding homes, medical efforts, mental health support and educational initiatives.

Not only will Zakat Foundation offer support and celebration in its international offices, but they will also host events in the US. Regional offices in Milpitas CA, Newark DE, Lake Mary FL, Jericho NY, Durham NC, Houston, TX and Chicago IL will host various community events including Iftar dinners, clothing and food distributions, educational workshops and other programs. Those interested in participating or volunteering can contact nayma@zakat.org. For those in need in Chicagoland, the new Socials Services Center in Harvey, IL also provides clothing, shoes, hygiene and other essential items.

Updates and additional information can be found at zakat.org/ramadan. Zakat Foundation of America will continue to report on its Ramadan efforts as the unfold. Anyone wishing for more information on Ramadan, ZFA or zakat giving can contact the call center at 1-888-ZAKAT-US during regular business hours (CST). ZFA also offers immense resources such as a zakat calculator, zakat materials, blogs and media on their website.

Zakat Foundation of America strives to support recovery and development in all its forms, aligning with the UN’s 17 Goals for Sustainable Development. Zakat Foundation of America has been featured in the pressincluding CNN Max, Fox News, WGN, ABC and NBC among others. Media including photos and videos are available on the organizations website and social media. Additional media requests or interview requests can be submitted to lindsey.b@zakat.org

Founded in 2001 by Halil Demir, Zakat Foundation of America is a 501(c)3 NGO that helps generous and caring people reach out to those in need. THIS PASSOVER HOLIDAY, PJ LIBRARY OFFERS FAMILIES DOZENS OF ENGAGING ACTIVITIES, RECIPES, AND RESOURCES ON THEIR OVERSTUFFED PASSOVER HUB – AND MUCH MORE!

From the evening of April 22 to April 30, Jews across the world partake in the annual celebration of Passover, a 3,300-year-old story of freedom and sacrifice, commemorating their liberation from slavery in Egypt. It’s one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the Jewish calendar, and PJ Library, one of the leading resources for Jewish families across North America, offers up dozens of ways to help celebrate, whether you need a refresher on a few traditions, you just want to learn more about the history of the holiday, or you’re celebrating Passover for the very first time.

Click over to PJ Library’s Passover Hub to find kid-friendly ways to tell the Passover story along with downloadable activities to keep children engaged during their family’s seder (traditional Passover meal). While there you can also find seasonal recipes, book lists, and a step-by-step video playlist where kids can learn (or refresh) some serious seder skills. All of these resources are guaranteed to make your Passover as meaningful and family-focused as possible. Some highlights include A Passover FAQ for Kids which offers answers to 10 common questions kids ask, along with easy answers for grown-ups to refer to on the spot, along with Passover Printables and a special “Who Knows About Passover” card game.

And what would a Jewish holiday be without food, an important component of nearly every celebration!  This year, PJ Library invites families to taste the freedom of Passover with Matzah Mania offering a trio of fun and easy matzah recipes including a homemade recipe for the unleavened bread that’s holy roll-y DIY fun in less than 18 minutes, a matzah grazing board and more.  Other recipes sure to be enjoyed by the whole family including a delectable fire-roasted tomato soup with cheddar matzah crisps and matzah bruschetta which is a snap to make and works as a great snack, lunch, or side!

Throughout the 2024 holiday, PJ Library has also partnered with Streit’s, and be featured on their iconic matzo boxes.  For many, enjoying PJ Library books is as baked into family tradition as eating Streit’s Matzos on Passover. For others who’ve gone without the free stories and activities PJ Library sends every month for zero dough (leavened or otherwise), they can now be led out of the desert thanks to the opportunity to sign up for a subscription on every box of Streit’s Matzos.  So, in addition to searching for the afikomen this year, families can now search for the PJ Library logo on Streit’s Matzos boxes in supermarkets across North America or on streitsmatzos.com.

For centuries, families have used a Passover guidebook called the Haggadah, to tell the story of the holiday and pass down the traditions and lessons of the story to their children, relatives, and friends (the Hebrew word haggadah literally means “telling”).  One of the leading sources for family-friendly Haggadahs across the United States and beyond – nearly 50,000 families have said this was their first Haggadah, and PJ Library has shipped nearly one million Haggadahs to over 200,000 families over the past six years — PJ Library will once again offer anyone celebrating the holiday a downloadable PDF version of IN EVERY GENERATION: A PJ LIBRARY FAMILY HAGGADAH.  Aside from the traditional prayers and readings, this interactive guide to the Passover seder offers up specially curated videos of songs and blessing and explanations that help make the holiday a fun, engaging and family-friendly experienceFor those interested in purchasing paperback versions, both the regular PJ Library Family Haggadah ($7.99) and a Large Print Edition ($10.99) are available for sale on the PJ Library storefront on Amazon.

Finally, PJ Library curates age specific books for its subscribers from birth through age 8. Last year children ages 3 to 4 received a delightful spin on a classic Yiddish folktale “In Our Teeny Tiny Matzah House”, written by Bill Wurtzel and illustrated by Claire Wurtzel (Apple & Honey Press) in which Kitzel the cat can’t hear himself meow, as his house is too noisy.  But it’s about to become noisier because Passover is about to begin! And, kids ages 6 to 7 were sent “A Persian Passover” (Kalaniot Books), set in 1950’s Iran, written by Etan Basseri and illustrated by Rashin Kheiriyeh, which finds Ezra and Roza looking forward to celebrating the holiday until they have an unfortunate mishap with the community matzah baking oven. If families don’t want to miss out on getting books each month, including for future holidays, they can sign up today.
