    Beginning of December, we decided to go forward with Cami’s TPLO surgery for her right hind leg since she was limping a lot after the park and walks. Her ‘partial tear’ was getting more noticeable and at the age of 2, we thought it won’t be fair for her to feel this way the rest of her long puppy life.     Witnessing your pet experience a seizure can be downright terrifying. For some animals, this could be a one-time experience, however in most cases, seizure recur and could even happen on a regular basis. It’s important to remember that seizures can happen unexpectedly with any breed and at any age. With this said, it’s important to be prepared and learn the best ways to react in order to help your pet properly recover. In those very scary moments, you may feel like a helpless observer, but please remember that you are far from it!

    Safety: During your pet’s seizures, you’ll want to keep these tips in mind.

    • You should never move your pet unless they are in danger. Although it looks like they are in extreme distress, your pet is not conscious nor in pain. It’s best just to leave them be. Instead, make the space they are in as safe as possible. Move chairs, tables, block the staircase, etc.
    • Don’t hold them close, pin them down or try to cuddle them. This will not benefit your pet and could potentially result in an injury.
    • Keep yourself safe. Your pet will most likely be completely  unaware of their surroundings or behavior during and after a seizure. Immediately after a dog experiences a seizure, he or she can become anxious, agitated and could even lose their sight temporarily. The sweetest dogs could be prone to bite while in this state, so it may be best to keep your space.

     

    Recovery: Depending on your pet and how long the seizure was, the recovery period can take a few minutes or it can take several hours.

    • A seizure uses a lot of energy so your pet will likely be disoriented and really tired after. They may have trouble standing, walk in circles or appear to seem “drunk”. It’s best to leave your pet nice and quiet without stimulating them. Often, they will want to sleep it off.
    • Unless your pet has never had a seizure before there’s no need to contact a veterinarian. If you notice that a few hours post seizure the symptoms aren’t improving or they’re worsening, then it’s a good time to contact the professionals.

     

    Remain Calm: It may feel impossible to remain calm during and after a seizure episode, but it’s a crucial step in helping them to recover.

    • Animals are extremely sensitive to our energy. With this said, remaining calm will help them to feel more at easeonce they come to consciousness.
    • Avoid moving frantically, making loud noises or yelling. Your pet is extremely vulnerable to loud sounds after a seizure. Close the windows. Maintain a cool interior with the shades drawn and minimal light. Keep the doors closed. A quiet and peaceful environment is best.

    Pet Tech:

    • More than half (56 percent) of pet parents say they have special tech just for their pet
    • Popular pet tech: health and nutrition apps (24 percent), pet monitoring cameras (22 percent), pet servicing apps (22 percent) and smart toys (20 percent)
    • Almost eight in 10 (79 percent) of pet owners who use pet tech use it for tracking or monitoring technology, including microchips (60 percent), cameras (22 percent) or tracking devices (20 percent).

    Alternative Treatments:

    • Those who have used CBD oil or hemp products with their pets have done so as part of a general health plan (45 percent), to care for an older pet (45 percent), for a specific behavioral condition (39 percent) or for temporary relief such as following surgery or on a flight (39 percent).
    • Of the one in four (24 percent) who admit they pamper their pet with therapies, they are most likely to treat their pet with aromatherapy (81 percent), reflexology (79 percent) or naturopathy (73 percent).

    Eating like Their Humans:

    • When it comes to diet, pets reign superior: more than half (52 percent) believe they feed their pets better than themselves. Millennials are more likely to say this (60 percent vs. 48 percent for 35+), as well as dog owners (56 percent vs. 48 percent for cat owners).

    At Home Pet Spa Treatment with Kibble Pet

    Tomorrow is the day of Cami’s TPLO surgery on her right knee! We went back and forth last 7 months and we finally decided to do this surgery for her. She has been limping badly after running and playing and the dr confirmed that it is time. So in anticipation for her 12 week at home recovery, I have been pampering her to the max before the big day. I took her to the Strip for shopping! We went to Anthropologie and sniffed the fake snow and got lots of pets from everyone.

    And then we went to the park for a nice sunny stroll. Cami met a few new friends and had a little run, then limped her way back to the car. After a short nap, I gave her the full spa treatment! Ear cleaning, paw pedicure, nose moisturizing and a full bath with shampoo and conditioner from Kibble Pet. The bath was heavenly and she loved every moment of it. Except for the part her head got wet, she doesn’t like that so much. So I’ll just use a washcloth for her face next time.
