Pet Summer Safety Guide
With summer on the horizon and temperatures on the rise, weather conditions can become potentially hazardous for pets. In an effort to help increase awareness about the importance of summer safety, the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS), a nonprofit trade association dedicated to promoting the welfare of animals, created a summer safety guide with valuable tips and best practices for protecting pets during the warm summer months.
“As pet parents, it’s our responsibility to protect our animals from summer threats including exposure to extreme heat,” said NAPPS president Yvette Gonzales. “Pet parents tend to forget that the sun isn’t the only thing they have to worry about. There are a lot of other risks that pets face during the summer months.”NAPPS urges pet parents to also consider these additional tips to help keep pets safe and cool under the summer’s sun:
- Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day. If you’re unable to walk your dog when it’s cooler outside, hire a professional pet sitter.
- Apply sunscreen made specifically for pets to light skinned and light-furred dogs. Although their fur helps provide protection, areas around their mouth, ears and belly remain susceptible to sunburn.
- Don’t rely on a dog house to shield your pup from the sun. A dog house can be just as dangerous as a hot car. Make sure dog houses are in the shade and have proper ventilation.
- Make sure you use pet safe products in your yard. For example, azaleas, lilies and certain plant food can be fatal to pets.
- Keep grilling supplies out of your pet’s reach. Dogs love hanging out by the grill and they might mistake something like charcoal briquettes for food and become sick. Keep an eye on your grill and what’s or who is around it.
- Never leave your pet alone in a parked car – even if it’s just for a few minutes. Cars can heat up quickly and can cause heatstroke and hyperthermia, which can result in death.

The Rise of Sneaker Culture

From their modest origins in the mid-nineteenth century to high-end sneakers created in the past decade, sneakers have become a global obsession. The Rise of Sneaker Culture is the first exhibition to explore the complex social history and cultural significance of the footwear now worn by billions of people throughout the world.
The exhibition, which includes approximately 150 pairs of sneakers, looks at the evolution of the sneaker from its beginnings to its current role as status symbol and urban icon. Included are works from the archives of manufacturers such as Adidas, Converse, Nike, Puma, and Reebok as well as private collectors such as hip-hop legend Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, sneaker guru Bobbito Garcia, and Dee Wells of Obsessive Sneaker Disorder. Also featured are sneakers by Prada and other major fashion design houses and designers, as well as those made in collaboration with artists including Damien Hirst and Shantell Martin. Film footage, interactive media, photographic images, and design drawings contextualize the sneakers and explore the social history, technical innovations, fashion trends, and marketing campaigns that have shaped sneaker culture over the past two centuries.
The Rise of Sneaker Culture is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto. It is curated by Elizabeth Semmelhack, Senior Curator, Bata Shoe Museum.
Many local artists who feature books, toys, DIY kits and collectibles are available at the museum during the run of this show.

Why take temperature measurements at the skin surface over the temporal artery? 
The best place to measure temperature is the center of the heart, but this can be done only under a doctor’s supervision. Doctors know that measurement of the blood temperature in a major artery accurately reflects true body temperature. The TemporalScanner Thermometer is designed to measure the temperature of the skin surface over the temporal artery, a major artery of the head. The temporal artery is connected to the heart via the carotid artery, directly leading from the aorta, the main trunk of the arterial system. It offers constant blood flow. It is the only such artery positioned close enough to the skin surface to provide access needed to take an accurate measurement. It is easy to use because it is ideally located at the front portion of the forehead. The TemporalScanner is easier and gentler to use than other types of measurement devices such as oral, rectal, underarm and in-ear thermometers because it is truly non-invasive.
How does the TemporalScanner Thermometer work? As you gently stroke the thermometer across the forehead crossing over the temporal artery, the sensor in its probe performs two processes: First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses and; Second, at the same time, a patented system measures the ambient temperature of the site where the temperature is being taken. The patented “arterial heat balance” (AHB) software then synthesizes the two separate readings to accurately determine and display body temperature.
