Go Bold in the Cold: Four Patterns That Make Fall Fabulous

All your favorite bold patterns from spring and summer are officially out of season now that the weather has gotten colder, but this doesn’t mean you can’t still stand out with a vibrant touch to all of your favorite outfits. Although these pieces will often have to be balanced with black, brown and other neutral shades, you can liven up the gray skies and dead leaves all around you without standing out in an overly distracting way. For some help on achieving this balance, try out the following four fashion tips.

    1. Animal Print Scarves

It doesn’t get much bolder than animal print, which is perfect since this pattern is quickly becoming a staple item in every fashionista’s fall wardrobe. Animal print scarves are an effortlessly chic way to add a little color and pizzazz to any ordinary outfit, and come with unique versatility that offers plenty of opportunities for mixing and matching. For example, try tying a scarf around the waist of a long-sleeved dress or making a cute bow on your favorite handbag to add color to a basic outfit with no extra accessories neccessary.

    2. Polka Dotted Tights

Tights are essential for both practical and fashionable purposes, since you can use these accessories to make your spring dresses warm enough for fall or to add a little flavor to a basic black or gray skirt. Although there are tons of fun patterns to choose from when it comes to tights–just check out Nasty Gal’s collection–polka dots are a safe realm to explore if you just want to add a fun and feminine accent to your outfit without drawing too much attention.

    3. Classic Plaids

Another fun and fresh way to play it safe is by bringing plaids back onto the fashion scene with the always-stylish plaid skirt or a preppy plaid headband to maintain a subtle appearance that revives this classic pattern. Red plaids are perfect for those early days of fall where the leaves are bright and vibrant shades of crimson, gold and green; while cooler blue and green plaids may be best for those chilly overcast days.

    4. Decorated Cowboy Boots

Boots have always been a must-have for fall, but this season the trend is leaning toward cowboy boots for an edgy western look that has you ready for action at any given moment. Look for boldly contrasted floral prints for the perfect girly touch on this tough-looking footwear. You can even look for brightly colored toe and trim designs to make a statement and allow for better coordination with your fall outfits.

Just like the brightly colored leaves against the gray sky, you can stand out with your fall wardrobe against all those who play it safe with grays and browns throughout the season. Try to equip your wardrobe with the perfect blend of neutrals and head-turning patterns, so your outfits can mix and match easily and allow you to feel cute and feminine no matter how drizzly and cold it might be. Once you’ve tried out these basic patterns, don’t be afraid to go even bolder with unconventional patterns to add a more unique touch to your style.

Dress up for Dinner: Putting Together a Classy Outfit

Whether you’re heading out to eat at a fancy restaurant or going to a friend’s house for a dinner party, you want to put together an outfit that’s just as fancy as the food you’ll be eating. Getting dressed up for dinner is one of my favorite occasions because I feel both old-fashioned and modern as I put together an outfit that shows off my unique style without being too outrageous. Here are the steps I follow when I need to get dressed up for a fancy dinner.

    Start With a Classic Dress

I have several fancy dresses that are blank slates for the rest of my outfit. I spent forever shopping for these, but I’ll get a lot of use out of them. I have a little black dress, a lighter floral dress for spring and summer, and a longer, more conservative dress for those times when I’ll be around my grandparents. Choose styles that flatter your body shape and get a few dresses to have on hand for any occasion.

    Dress Up–Literally–with Heels

You definitely need to wear heels for a fancy dinner, and you should have a classic black pair as your default. If your dinner isn’t quite as formal, consider a brightly colored pair that will really pop, and then tie the shoes in with some of your accessories. Strappy heels are fine for summer, but opt for closed toes in cooler weather.

    Add Fashionable Accessories

This is where you can shine as you show off your style a little more. A super formal dinner calls for classics like a pearl necklace, simple rings, and perhaps a pair of shimmering dangly earrings. If your dinner is less formal, let your style shine through with accessories you love. Tasteful, inexpensive accessories are the perfect way to add new life to a dress you’ve had for a while. Don’t forget about less conventional items, like a fun belt, to make your outfit more interesting.

    Don’t Forget Hair and Makeup

There have been times when I’ve thought so much about my outfit that I completely forget about my hair and makeup until it was almost time to go. Don’t make that rookie mistake, and plan ahead. Curls are always classy for a dinner out, but if you don’t have time for that, rely on a simple updo that works well with your hair. For makeup, play it safe with classic colors that make you look made up, but don’t draw attention away from your natural features.

I love getting dressed up for dinner, and I take advantage of it every time I have the chance. If you’re going out with friends, you can even invite them over to get dressed up together, which is always fun. They may even be able to show you a new way to do your hair or makeup or lend you a pair of shoes that goes perfectly with your outfit.

    Headphone Necklace from @ShopMixology

I love, love this cute headphone necklace from online boutique, Mixology. Mixology is the self-described fashion destination for women “who care more about style than about brand names.” Almost everything is under $100!

At $40 a pop, these earbud headphones look just like a necklace. You can either wear them around your neck or like traditional headphones. When they’re around you neck, you can take the earbuds out and just let them hang when you’re not listening to them.

The sound is really good and it comes with replacement buds covers, a carrying sack, and an extension piece to make the cord longer. Another convenient feature is the built in microphone that allows you to use the headphones for hands-free talking on the phone.

I love them because they are unique and stylish. On my daily commute I see people with all types of headphones but I’ve never seen anyone with these. I’ve already gotten compliments–these are definitely on my favorite accessories list!
