The Best Nail Polish Colors for Winter

Winter is around the corner – but don’t go and retire your favorite fall colors anytime soon. Celebrity manicurist and owner of As U Wish Nail Spa, Skyy Hadley chose five shades that make for the ultimate manicure to transition from fall-to-winter. From a classic neutral to hot cocoa-inspired hues, these five polishes can be worn throughout the upcoming seasons.

    1.Cozy, Caramel-Colored Neutral

    (Caramel)

Can’t go wrong with the classics. A warm-toned neutral is chic and minimalistic, and compliments anything you’re wearing. Switch things up, and opt for a matte finish instead of your glossy go-to.

    2.Gilded in Gold

This time of the year is gold’s time to shine. It is always sure to dazzle – whether you can use it as an accent nail or a complete, show-stopping metallic manicure. It compliments all holiday color palettes effortlessly, making it versatile enough to bounce from season to season.

    3.Forest Green

Nothing says holiday bliss more than a true shade of green. Somewhere in-between a medium-toned moss and a deep forest green, hunter green is an eye-catching color suited for fall, winter, and beyond.

    (Cranberry)

    4.Soft Chocolate

I’m loving cozy, chocolate colored nails this season. The muted neutral isn’t too flashy, while still standing apart from your average nude. Milk chocolate manicures are universally flattering on any skin tone, and a tasteful (and tasty) way to transition into the cold winter months.

    5.Cranberry

Cranberry is a fun and festive twist on a classic red manicure. The gorgeous color will add a touch of glamour to your look, and serve as a subtle compliment to all of the seasonal décor.

    New Trend – Shellac Manicures!

I had a Spa Day on Sunday and I discovered a new kind of manicure! I got a Shellac Manicure done at EuroSpa here in Buffalo.

It is a gel that goes on like regular polish and it is chip-free that lasts 14 days! It also doesn’t smudge and is scratch free. It’s only been a couple days now so we will see.

The manicure was like any other manicure you get done. It was about 45 minutes long, where a base coat was put on, then the color coat, followed by a topcoat. You have to dry it with a UV Lamp so Shellac is only sold to licensed professionals.

Here are some pictures…I got red for Chinese New Year! 🙂 I also have very short nails since mine are so brittle and weak. Supposedly, this should help my nails grow!

As for pricing, EuroSpa charges $30 for a Shellac Manicure, $10 more than a Basic Pedicure. I paid $20 because I had a coupon so it was definitely worth it to me. Also for removal of Shellac, they recommend you going back to where you get it done so they can professionally remove it, but I was also told I could do it myself. For my first time, I’m going to go back to EuroSpa (& maybe pick another Shellac color out if I like it enough)!

EuroSpa also offers massages, pedicures, facials, sauna sessions, etc. If you are around the Buffalo area I definitely recommend them, and if not, treat yourself to a spa day somewhere near you! Check out EuroSpa’s Facebook page for more information.

Also take a look at Shellac – CND for more information on Shellac! More and more salons are getting it so keep your eyes peeled!

Let us know if any of you have tried this kind of manicure!

Year of the Dragon Manicure @BariBeauty

Time to get CRACKING for Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year is observed for two consecutive weeks, and is popularly known as Spring Festival. It usually starts from late January and early February. The variation in the date of festival is due to the changes in the track of the new moon. The Spring Festival ends on the 15th day when the Lantern festival is celebrated. Pure Ice has a quick and simple nailpolish set to help you achieve this perfect look.

In 2012, Chinese New Yearss Day will be celebrated on January 23. The New Year festival will start from January 22 (Chinese New Year’ Eve) and end on February 6 (Lantern Festival). 2012 marks the 4710th Chinese New Year, and this time it is the Year of Dragon according to the Chinese zodiac calendar.

The Dragon is the 5th sign of the Chinese zodiac and it is regarded as an auspicious symbol which stands for power, good luck, success, and happiness.

Since ancient times, the Chinese New Year was considered as the time to honor ancestors and heavenly deities. In addition, it was the time to organize family gatherings and grand feasts.

There is a legend associated with the celebration of New Year in China. There was a monster named Nian who used to harass the villagers by eating their crops, cattle and taking away their kids. The villagers had no other option but to place food at the entrance to their homes so that the monster would eat it and go away without harming them.

One day, the villagers realized that the monster was scared of red color. So, they adorned their doors and windows with red paper cutouts and spring scrolls. The villagers also burst crackers to frighten the monster. Since then, Nian never came again to the village. Hongjun Laozu, a Taoist monk, was the one who captured the beast later on. Since then, the Chinese have been celebrating the capture of Nian on their New Year’s Day.

Chinese New Year is celebrated with fireworks, lion dancing, dragon dancing and cultural performances on the street. Families organize reunion dinners on New Year’s Eve and make special preparations like spring rolls and Chinese dumplings. Happy CNY everyone!

You can celebrate with Pure Ice Crackle Duo Gold & Red (ShowStopper) and ring in the Year of the Dragon in style.

    In the Biz: Beth Fricke

In the Biz with Beth Fricke

Beth Ficke is responsible for A listed manicures and has developed an impressive celebrity roster including Drew Barrymore, Sheryl Crow, Heidi Klum, Mariska Hargitay, Miranda Kerr, Christina Ricci, Mariah Carey and Lindsay Lohan. Fricke is currently serving as an O∙P∙I Celebrity Manicurist. Here is her tips to help you!

How can you extend the life of a manicure?
The best, easiest way is to put an additional coat of topcoat on and then apply oil to the cuticles.

What nail colors are complimentary on all skin tones?
There are some sheers and slightly darker reds that seem to work pretty universally.

Why should we use different products to moisturize our nails than for our hands?
When we moisturize hands, we are trying to moisturize the skin. When we do nails, we are trying to moisturize parts under the skin or the layered nail, that both require substantially more penetration.

What tips do you recommend to ensure a perfect manicure at home?
File the nails the same shape. Clean out under the nails to make sure there are no rough edges or corners. Gently buff over the top of the nail and cuticle with a soft (220 grit or higher) buffer and then brush them with a wet nail brush. Before you polish, wipe the nail with some polish remover to remove any oils. Make sure you hit the outer edge of the nail with polish and with the top coat to seal it in.
