Visiting the NYC Time Warner Medialab

The Time Warner Medialab is New York’s state-of-the-art research lab focus on consumer behavior across the content spectrum! All the research done in this building allows Time Warner and its key partners an opportunity to understand consumer insights from media, all the way through retail environment as well.

The Medialab, as TW calls the space, is based on the company’s Manhattan Time Warner Center headquarters and exists to, in official terms, “[incorporate] cutting-edge technologies and research techniques [to provide] an unmatched ability to test consumer engagement throughout the entire 360° media-to-retail experience.” Complete with biometric monitoring and eye-tracking capabilities, as well as focus group space for the old-fashioned analysts out there and broadcast capabilities to finetune test content, the massive location includes retail space, video game stations, an “in-home living-room simulation” and a 50-seat screening space to best sample product in a variety of settings. According to the project’s official website, “In order to foster the company’s continued growth as a progressive supplier of engaging content, Time Warner and its core divisions–HBO, Time Inc., Turner, and Warner Bros.–consider the Medialab an essential instrument in understanding consumer behavior, evolving media habits, and industry trends.”

I had the chance to visit the Time Warner Medialab in Columbus Circle in New York City this week!

The first place worth mentioning is the testing studio. When you enter the Studio One, you can see one large screen and one computer screen showing the same content. A guy in the camera was shown on the screen, and there are lines linking red dots on jumping around the whole screen, which means the direction your eyesight goes. In the real world, that is used by a track which part of the screen can attract people’s attention when they are watching. On the other, second-screen apps that complement the TV viewing experience can heighten people’s response to the advertising and programming.

The next room we went to is the Control Room. That is where Time Warner conducts the tests for their media products. Different focus groups of people will be invited to take the interview and finish surveys. The whole control room is neat with a clean table of-of bunch chairs, but there are some interesting secrets under that. If you squat to see the bottom side of the table, you will see eight displayers hiding in there. Because of that design, instruments can hide well under the neat appearance.

The Time Warner is a terrific place for the media business. It can let the media company know how consumers engage with content and enable testing with the latest devices and distribution platform.

    A Night with the Stars @ CAPE + Verizon’s #IAM Night Out

    Ciao lovelies!

This past week I was fortunate to join CAPE + Verizon’s #IAM Night Out in NYC.

    IMG_5622

CAPE, or the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment is an incredible non profit who’s goal is to shed light on Asian American Pacifics in the media. Some of the fellows from this year include Constance Wu (aka sassy mom from FRESH OFF THE BOAT) and Youtube Sensation Joseph Vincent  (You’re welcome ladies!)

The #IAM campaign was really special because it allowed these amazing self made professionals to tell the story of how they started off and how they got to where they are today. I think anyone, regardless of their heritage can relate to chasing a dream, and then with some luck and hard work, actually achieving it!

A lot of fashionistas came out to see the event. I LOVE this flowery print top paired with this solid black skirt. I also loved the unique detailing of this Indian Septum ring spotted on one of the lovely ladies from the event’s sponsor, Verizon.

The night was seasoned with some AMAZING live performances form Youtube musicians Joseph Vincent and Justin Chen and some hilarious stand up from Host/stand up comedian Paul PK Kim. Some inspiring stories also came from Yong Kim, Ted Kim, and Chris Oh, two brothers and a childhood bestie who quit their advertising jobs to start the Korean sausage company, Seoul Sausage Co. They ended up competing in Food Network’s “Food Truck Race” in season 3 and won EVERY. SINGLE. ROUND. (mic drop)

As inspiring as that was, my favorite anecdote came from Dancing With The Star’s, Carrie Ann Inaba and her very first audition for the early 90’s show, “IN LIVING COLOR“. (PS- I have no words for the dancing or outfits in this link:)

For those of you who don’t know, this is the show where JLO, “Jenny from the Block” first made her way in the spotlight. After a vigorous dance audition, creator Keenan Ivory Wayans said to Carrie, “Do you know why I chose you? You were the worst dressed person but you walked in with such confidence, I gave you the job before I even saw you dance. You were so confident, I had to drink your Kool Aid.”

So my Reading Rainbow message to you lovely folks tonight is, remember, the world isn’t about just what you wear, but also your mindset. If you believe in yourself, than maybe the rest of the world will follow suit and you’ll be one step closer to achieving your dream. Maybe it’ll be you up on stage inspiring us all one day:)

    Chau for now!

    Go Beyonce Go Beyonce!!!

I dunno about the title, it just seemed right, avoiding the rhyme. ‘Countdown’ is the track… but this video, to me, is a testimonial to the husslaaa that is Ms. Beyonce Knowles. Even while “with child”, she’s on the grind, making it work. Visually, this is one of the most engaging videos she (or anyone else in a mainstream environment) has done in a very long time! Drums, thong, Andy Warhol, pop art, head shots… I Love this video, take it in and applaud with me! xo

Check This Out – Page One

Working at an almost 30 year old publishing firm, this trailer went through the office and has evoked many, manyyy opinions. Page One is the limitedly screened film about the ‘goings on’ during one year at The New York Times, when print editorial first met its biggest threat… online mass media. Check the trailer below, i’m dying to catch this film. As mentioned, several people at my office were able to view a screening and definitely came back with plenty to talk about.

Produced by Magnolia Pictures of Ong Bak & I’m Still Here, the Joaquin Phoenix moc-umentary.xoxo.

    What Up With Joaquin?

While home sicky-icky, I stumbled across this flick on Joaquin Phoenix called “I’m Still Here” and couldn’t help but hold the channel… shot in documentary-style, the camera follows Joaquin (pronounced WAH-keen) and his battle with drugs after his announcement to leave acting and focus on a RAP career.

    Catch the official trailer…
I won’t spoil the film, but I will tell you that I couldn’t resist doing more research and (while it was totally worth watching) theres more to this story… First, I was literally in tears watching, as Joaquin Phoenix is an actor that I literally grew up with; my Mum and her friends were a huge fan of himself as well as his brother, River Phoenix, who’s tragic overdose was tossed across the media in the early ’90s. Truth is… the film is a mok-u-mentary that Phoenix and directing partner Casey Affleck created to explore famosity, the relationship of the media and the consumer by literally exposing the celebrity. This was done, under the awareness of very few people, to make it all the more real… and impactful!
