Matthew Jocelyn directs THIS by Canadian playwright Melissa James Gibson
Staged at the historic Berkeley Street Theatre
    March 18 to April 13

Toronto, ON – Canadian Stage presents THIS, an un-romantic comedy by acclaimed Canadian playwright, Melissa James Gibson, from March 18 to April 13 (opening and media night: March 21). Directed by Canadian Stage’s Artistic & General Director Matthew Jocelyn, and featuring Laura Condlln, Christian Laurin, Yanna McIntosh, Alon Nashman and Jonathon Young, the play is an honest portrait of a group of 30-something friends navigating their way through death, parenthood, love and adultery. THIS marks the first time New York-based Gibson’s work has been presented in Toronto.

“THIS is a searingly truthful and humourous look at what it is like to be an adult in 2013,” said Jocelyn. “Melissa has written a play about the stuff life is made of with sensitivity, intelligence and grace. We’re creating a production that walks the fine line between presence and absence of theatrical convention, as we try to investigate the subjective experience of the word ‘this’. We’re delighted to bring together this remarkable cast to explore the world created by Melissa James Gibson, a kind of modern-day Chekhov.”

With set and costume designer Astrid Janson, Jocelyn brings the Berkeley Street Theatre space (once a pump room in a gas pumping station) as close to its original state as possible, exposing long-covered doors, windows and brickwork. The simple set, with lighting and sound design by Jason Hand and Richard Feren respectively, underscores this stripped-bare performance mode. Uncovered windows mean alternate lighting cues will be used during matinee and evening performances.

Collaborating with the cast, Janson has created a wardrobe of outfits for each character to choose from, with multiple options to mix and match before each show. In approaching the design, Janson did not present costume sketches or concepts to the cast or creative team, but established a series of contemporary, realistic costume elements through a workshop period with performers.

Every Thursday evening, live jazz music from Alex Coleman or Nathan Hiltz will be played in the lobby of the Berkeley Street Theatre before the show. On Saturday, April 6 during the 2 p.m. performance, Canadian Stage will offer on-site childcare, featuring a mask making workshop and costume party for children aged two to 12, giving 30-something theatregoers a babysitting option. Childcare provided by Improv Care is free with a ticket to the performance. Space is limited, and will be booked on a first-come-first-served basis.

An Evening with Barb Stegemann @The7Virtues

It is always exciting when home grown (Canadian) talent makes it big! Barb wrote a book called the 7 Virtues on a healing journey after tragedy struck her best friend and the perfume is the product that came to fruition from this journey. The essential oils are sourced from plants from countries like Haiti and Afghanistan that are rebuilding after natural disasters or after war. Some of the ingredients include Vetiver from Haiti, Lime and Basil from Iran, Orange Blossom and Rose from Afghanistan.

Barb Stegemann, CBC Dragons’ Den Winner, was introduced to me by a mutual friend and her zest for life and passion for her business is admirable!  Within 2 years, the 7 Virtues have made it to TOP 5 on the Chatelaine Beauty 100 Award and is carried in Lord & Taylor and the Bay. These fragrances are Paraben free – Phthalate free. The perfumes are $70 and up.

Emily Miller started her career in makeup as commercial talent who became transfixed by the beauty and artistry created by the makeup artists she worked with. They inspired her to learn the craft and she picked up books by acclaimed makeup artists Kevin Auchoin and Bobbi Brown. As Emily tells it, “I was enamored by what they did and I wanted to do it. So I studied their techniques and I taught myself the skills that would allow me to follow my true passion.”

Since May of 2010, Emily has become a highly successful bridal makeup artist and has become the “go-to” artist women clamor to on their special day. “I adore doing weddings,” Emily enthuses. “They are thrilling to me. The event is marked by so much happiness, love, anticipation, desire, fun… there are so many wonderful emotions!”

Emily’s clientele often remark about how calm she is throughout the entire bridal makeup process and it’s a quality that has lent to her explosive success as the brides appreciate her soothing presence on an often stressful day. Emily maintains this presence throughout the process while ensuring that entire wedding parties are executed flawlessly. After the wedding, the brides are quick to recommend her. Her secret to success, she says, “rests in presenting healthy skin that enhances what is already there rather than creating something that isn’t. Everybody has a feature that stands out and I notice it and I find beauty in that feature.”
