    Kinky Update: Low Manipulation Challenge

    photo-2012-11-07-23-00-21-465-1

I haven’t shared my natural hair journey on here in a while, and I recently received the sweetest message from one of our readers about how she got inspired to go natural and stay natural, after reading my posts, sooooooooooo… here goes. As many of you know I started my transition in September maybe October of 2010. I did my big chop in January of 2012, and have been fully and happily natural ever since. I read that it was wise to keep your hair in protective styles during the transitioning process and after; as this not only helps the hair from breaking, but also aides in bringing back the once lost curl pattern as a result of a relaxer. So I kept my hair in twists all the time, which got incredibly boring as I like to change my hair as often as I can (everyday). I noticed there was lots of growth for a while and then my hair seemed to stop growing and was breaking a lot, despite the bi-weekly trimming I was doing (so unnecessary by the way). I hadn’t changed my haircare regimen, I was still deep conditioning and moisturizing like a maniac so I’m not sure what was happening… then I realized I’d been doing all kinds of things with my hair. I’d coloured it red, I was switching protective styles weekly, some days I fell asleep without a satin wrap… my hair was clearly pissed off, and showing it.

    Day 1 of the challenge

So 12 weeks ago, I decided it was time to stop being lazy and to go back to loving my hair. I went onto BlackGirlLongHair for some Kink-spiration (my go-to for everything natural hair), and while perusing hundreds of articles, I came across a few that stressed keeping your protective styles in for as long as possible, as this not only helped eliminate breakage, but also helped retain length.

    9 days in…  Fuzzy and already locking/meshing

That’s all I needed to hear, the only problem is my hair normally starts to lock/mesh after a week, and this is why I was always messing with my hair. I wanna rock a big sexy afro this summer, so I need to do all that I can to ensure that my hair is strong and healthy. So I decided to challenge myself.

First twists with Elentee Soy Organics Twist & Lock Gel

I would do a protective style and leave it in for as long as I could. Sounds easy enough right? Wrong, I couldn’t even bare to think about the boredom of rocking one hairstyle for weeks… Ugh. So long story short, I did mini-twists and lasted 9 days. Then I found this miracle gel, called Elentee Soy Organics Twist & Lock Gel, and managed to keep my twists in for 18 days!

    IMG_20121213_182948

    Re-twist after 18 days!

My hair didn’t lock/mesh once, it was so easy to untwist, and there was little to no breakage! I kept those twists in till about the first week of January (WHAT!!), but was in desperate need of a change; so rather than re-do the mini twists, I went for chunky twists instead. I’ve deep conditioned three times since putting in the chunky twists, and other than re-doing the front ones to make them look neater, I haven’t touched my hair… well until today when I did a deep condition 🙂

Things I’ve discovered since my low manipulation challenge:

    1. It’s definitely harder than I thought, but so rewarding when you see the progress in length, strength and overall look of my hair.

    2. Elentee Soy Organics Twist & Lock Gel is a winner for girls who wanna rock mini-twists but are worried about it locking/meshing.

    3. My hair is longer, stronger and thicker.

    4. I will ALWAYS ALWAYS…ALWAYS twist my hair with Elentee Soy Organics Twist & Lock Gel. Always.

My hair now (with shrinkage). Happy 🙂

    peace and love

Beyoncé’s Minx Nail Fashion at the Superbowl:

Behind the Scenes by Celebrity Nail Stylist Lisa Logan

     nail

No one on the planet can deny that Beyoncè’s halftime performance at the Superbowl was sheer perfection… and New York celebrity nail stylist Lisa Logan can attest that reaching that level of perfection takes a ton of preparation!

On Saturday, January 26 at 5:00 pm in the evening, celebrity nail stylist and salon owner Lisa Logan received a phone call asking her to jump on the first available flight to New Orleans to create the nail styles for Beyoncé  and her backup dancers that would be performing at the Superbowl halftime extravaganza.

Why the urgency a week before the event?  The next morning, Beyoncé’s team would be filming highly specialized holographic effects for the top-secret halftime spectacle, and all the backup dancers and Beyoncé needed to have their nails styled with Minx, the solid nail coating that is the undisputed leader in high impact nail fashion.

“As soon as I arrived at the hotel, I began working on creating super long nail tips covered with the Gold and Matte Gold Chevron Minx that would be worn by the backup dancers,” explained Lisa.  “The process was very time consuming because the nails were going to be used in the holographic segment where it looks like Beyoncé has multiple arms (see screen shot attached), so all the dancers had to be wearing the same design.  And, because the nails were so long, I needed to use two Minx templates to cover each tip.”  (See exclusive photos of backup dancers taken by Lisa Logan).

Lisa completed applying Minx to the tips around 4:00 am, and was back at the hotel just 3 hours later, ready to apply the finished Minx  to the ten backup dancers who were arriving to begin filming.  By noon on January 27, Beyoncé had also arrived and Lisa applied the same Matte Gold Chevron Minx to her nails as well, pointing out that “since the hologram was made to look like Beyoncé had multiple arms, obviously everyone had to be wearing the same design for the video.”

Beyoncé, who last month posted a custom Minx design inspired by New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat on Instagram (see attached Instagram photo), often wears custom Minx colors and designs, with the Minx metallics a particular favorite due to the high impact it delivers on stage and on the red carpet.

Since Minx is the only patented heat-activated solid nail coating, Lisa explains that the nail coating literally conforms to the actual shape of the nail, and can last up to two weeks on the fingers and six weeks on the toes.  Beyoncé’s perfectly Minxed nails at the Superbowl halftime show were the same set that had been applied a full week prior, and were the same Minx she wore for her January 31 press conference in which she sang a superb live rendition of the national anthem (see attached photo).

Fans who would love to experience Minx can purchase their own DIY Minx nails by logging on to thewww.MinxTastingRoom.com, or can have a set professionally applied at a Minx-certified salon found through thewww.MinxNails.com salon finder.

The solid nail coating can be worn on either natural nails or tips and are constantly seen on celebrities including Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez.

“our focus is ‘slow design’, a counter-movement to ‘fast fashion’.”- Muttonhead

Muttonhead recently revealed their A/W13 collection and I’m loving it. After taking a look at it, I’m all kinds of mad all over again for missing their pop-up shops/sales last year ( I was out of town. It won’t happen again) For those who are unfamiliar with Muttonhead, it’s a unisex, sportswear line ethically manufactured right here in Toronto, and it’s dope!

    4

I’m normally pretty colourful and girly when I dress, but I have my days where I just wanna keep it simple and chill in something comfy, but still look good, and if it’s made in Canada, even better! This is wear Muttonhead comes in. I love how everything is so well made, the hoodies are EVERYTHING, loves the crew-necks, feeling the accessories, and the best part is that it’s unisex, so I can rock the entire collection!

    17

I’m more of a fedora kinda girl, but I’d totally do it!

    5

    love everything!

    9

    Simple. Functional. Stylish. YES.

A big thank you to Paige for sharing this with us. Head over to the Muttonhead website to check out the rest of the collection, oh and they’re having a sale!!!!

    peace and love
