Revival @RichMedina Move Forward Music @freecandy

Situated in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, Free Candy is an independent art space, completely unrecognizable from the outside, but distinctive on the inside.  This weekend marked Move Forward Music’s 4th anniversary, celebrated with the first of their new monthly party night REVIVAL.

Myself and my friend Katy arrived at the venue for 10ish, just as the opening act Nai Palm was about to start her accoustic set. Coming straight from Australia, this was her first ever US show away from her band Hiatus Kaiyote. Playing for about an hour or more, her songs were unique, mellow and soulful and had us completely transfixed! Following her was the house DJ, who got people onto their feet and dancing, playing a mix of hip hop, rnb, house and reggae – a little something for everyone.

The venue itself very much had a casual house party vibe with low neon lights and burning incense – not to forget the bar serving drinks out of plastic cups. Doubling up as an art gallery, if you follow the narrow hallways to the back were two rooms full of big canvas paintings and sofas, ideal for those who wanted to mingle and didn’t especially want to dance – again emphasizing the cozy house party feel.

We didn’t stay too late as I unfortunately had work early the next day – so I can’t tell you how the evening continued or ended, but from what I did see – it was a fun night of good music, art and cool people. I would definitely go back!
