Revival @RichMedina Move Forward Music @freecandy

Situated in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, Free Candy is an independent art space, completely unrecognizable from the outside, but distinctive on the inside.  This weekend marked Move Forward Music’s 4th anniversary, celebrated with the first of their new monthly party night REVIVAL.

Myself and my friend Katy arrived at the venue for 10ish, just as the opening act Nai Palm was about to start her accoustic set. Coming straight from Australia, this was her first ever US show away from her band Hiatus Kaiyote. Playing for about an hour or more, her songs were unique, mellow and soulful and had us completely transfixed! Following her was the house DJ, who got people onto their feet and dancing, playing a mix of hip hop, rnb, house and reggae – a little something for everyone.

The venue itself very much had a casual house party vibe with low neon lights and burning incense – not to forget the bar serving drinks out of plastic cups. Doubling up as an art gallery, if you follow the narrow hallways to the back were two rooms full of big canvas paintings and sofas, ideal for those who wanted to mingle and didn’t especially want to dance – again emphasizing the cozy house party feel.

We didn’t stay too late as I unfortunately had work early the next day – so I can’t tell you how the evening continued or ended, but from what I did see – it was a fun night of good music, art and cool people. I would definitely go back!

Classic, funky, feminine: Fall earring trends

Fall fashion always features warm colors and richly textured fabrics, but the many different ways that plays out each year is what makes fashion so exciting. Fabrics get a little bulkier and bolder when cooler temperatures arrive, and the same is true for accessories. Those dainty silver hoops that went with everything last summer won’t stand up to fall’s sophistication, so here’s what you need to know about the best looks in earrings this season:

Long and lean

Earrings with long, graceful lines are on-trend for fall, with many current styles reminiscent of 1920s art deco style. Look for drop earrings featuring elegant combinations of gemstones and tassels, in sophisticated metallic finishes.

The time-tested bow

When a fashion tip comes straight from an industry source, you know it’s solid. The Jewelers of America Report predicts that bow-themed jewelry will be everywhere this fall. Bows are classic, feminine and sweet and can add an air of sophistication and charm to almost any outfit. Look for bow earrings for teens, tweens and adults in colorful resins and precious metals, as well as bows that sparkle with rhinestones or gems.

Boho fun

The interesting textures that keep Boho style trending are especially welcome in the fall. This season, look for earrings with genuine or fashioned feathers, beading, and touches of leather and other natural elements. The influence of east Asian and Mediterranean style really shines in some of the latest Boho styles. Earrings with animal print are also hot; bold zebra stripes look fabulous with the color scheme of fall clothing and can freshen-up last year’s outfits.

Soft and subtle

Every girl or woman with a romantic streak will love wearing trendy earrings made from cabochon beads, metal, stone and shells in gorgeous shades of cream, dusty rose and light turquoise blue. Wear these whimsical pieces with a blazer and tweed skirt, or with a T-shirt and jeans for a modern artsy look.

Accessories are the perfect way to extend your wardrobe from year to year. That same gray suit you drag out of the closet every fall can look fresh and fashionable with the addition of some trendy jewelry. And because earrings frame the face, they may be the most important accessory any woman ever wears. By choosing a few of today’s hottest looks in earrings, you’ll be sure to make a great first impression this fall.
